Bernard Frize
Centre Pompidou, Paris
29 May - 26 August, 2019

The Pompidou Center revisits the work of Bernard Frize, an essential French painter of the international art scene, since its beginnings in 1977. Known for its abstract conceptual paintings, during the 1980s, Frize incorporates figurative elements into his practice and also interested in photography.

The exhibition proposes a free thematic course, without direction or hierarchy, which blurs the serial approach characteristic of the work of the artist. Rich with sixty works, this project, conceived in close collaboration with the artist, brings us into the very act of creation, revealing which strategies and intellectual challenges underlie the painter's works.

Six themes structure the course of Oulipian inspiration and deliberately paradoxical: "With unreason, without effort, with system, without system, with mastery, without stoppping."
